Case Hardening

Low carbon content steels can be surface hardened by the introduction of carbon. Heat the steel workpiece to bright red (See: Colour Temperature) and then immerse in the case hardening compound and leave for 10 minutes. Reheat and repeat this process 4 to 5 times. The final treatment is to heat back to red and rapidly quench in water. The result is a hard glass-like finish. The final workpiece will be resistant to fatigue and cracking as the centre will be left unaltered and the outer 1/64 to 1/8 inch will be case hardened.
