Solenoid Motor

An electric motor that uses a linear solenoid as the driving force. Can be configured like a steam engine or IC engine with the solenoid replacing the cylinder and piston of these engines.

A small micro-switch operated by a cam turns on the current to the coil at the appropriate time and this generates a magnetic field that pulls/pushes the armature.

There are many different ways of arranging the coil and the armature. The above engine has what looks like a piston sliding through the centre of the coil, in this case it has a small magnet in the piston.

More normally the coil has a laminated core and the armature is attracted to the end of the solenoid.

The finished engine.....
