I broke a tap in the aluminium crankcase of the 5 cylinder rotary engine that I have been working on and after looking online the recommendation was to machine the tap out using solid carbide cutting tools. I did some searching and ended up back at one of my favourite suppliers arceurotrade.co.uk and saw that they were selling Solid Carbide end mills at around £8.50 each for the 3mm ones.
Not convinced about solid carbide end mills. This one lasted about 5 minutes of gentle use. It did do the job it was asked which was removing a broken tap, but the end mill did not survive.
I finished the job off with the normal TiN coated HSS end mills that I use.
Price: approx £8.50 for a 3mm end mill
Not as robust as I expected. It did most of the job of removing the tap and so worked, but did expect it to remain in one piece.
I would say rather expensive and would think twice before buying a second one.
Available at arceurotrade.co.uk
This end mill has now been turned into a point for a home made scriber - a great recycled part.
