Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley, the A4 Class Mallard 4-6-2 is still unbeaten as the fastest ever steam locomotive recording 125 miles per hour between Grantham and Peterborough on 3 July 1938, breaking the record previously held by the Flying Scotsman. The Mallard has a distinctive streamlined shape.

A locomotive which according to the Whyte classification is of the 2-6-0 wheel arrangement. Due to the cleverly designed front bogie the Mogul 2-6-0 ran like a locomotive with a two axle leading bogie e.g. 4-6-0. Giuseppe Zara designed a system that combined a leading axle with the first driving axle. With a slight amount of play allowed in the leading driving axle the result was a sort of leading bogie that allowed some rotation in curves. This is the Bissel bogie or 'Zara Truck' (known in Italy as the 'Carello Italiano').
A railway system, usually employing elevated track, in which the weight of the moving vehicles is taken on a single rail.
The material used for covering ("trimming") carriage seats. It is of rather thicker quality than normal upholstery material.
A general term for driving and valve gear on steam locomotives.

This refers to a self powered coach or set of coaches (may also be called motor coaches) that can be operated in multiple, ie. a driver in one unit can control all those so connected. Multiple units can be diesel or electric powered.
